Anubis was the ancient Egyptian god of cemeteries and embalming. He’s usually depicted as a canine or a man with a canine head. This scene is from the ‘Book of the Dead’ made for Hunefer, a royal scribe. It shows Anubis bringing Hunefer into the judgement area. The god is then seen supervising the judgement scales weighing Hunefer’s heart (represented as a pot). It was believed the heart was the seat of the emotions and intellect, and represented the person’s character. If the heart did not balance with the feather, the dead person was consumed by the ferocious ‘devourer’ – the beast with the crocodile head.
