Εξώφυλλο... από χειρογραφο, από δέρμα ελαφιού
Μεξικό προ 1521....
This is a scene from an incredibly rare Mixtec codex, made in Mexico before 1521. A codex is a book made up of handwritten pages, and this vividly coloured example is made from deerskin. The 47-leaf document contains two narratives, starting at opposite ends of the book. The first describes the marriages and the political and military achievements of 11th-century Mixtec ruler Lord Eight Deer Jaguar-Claw, and the second part tells the history of important centres in the Mixtec religion.
